Student podcast panel discussion along with Canvas forum for class reactions

Idea
3-4 students are panelists for a weekly podcast episode about a topic related to class and those that are not on the panel listen to the episode and post discussion comments on Canvas.
Panelist participation
Students must participate twice during the course as panelists. Panelists find an interesting news item from that week, present a concise summary, explain potential implications to our course topic, and specifically address a guiding question for that week’s episode (those guiding questions change to compliment course topics).
Non-panelist participation
On weeks when they are not panelists, students listen to the weekly episode and post their reaction or additional thoughts in a discussion forum on Canvas. Panelists are then free to respond (optional).
Logistics
The recording takes 20-25 minutes, during which time all 3-4 panelists present their news item and discussion points. The final several minutes are a discussion about connections between news items, common themes, other possible interpretations, etc.
Context
This is an element of the course International Education Program Marketing and Recruitment for – a course at MIIS in the MA- International Education Management program.
Feedback
The podcast has run two “seasons” along with two semesters of this class and students (after their fear of being in episode 1) have enjoyed the discussion with fellow panelists, and have enjoyed engaging with their colleagues in a new way. After the first semester with this element, students strongly advised keeping it going and suggested opening it up for alumni to participate in as well.
